Since immemorial time, the city of Marseille was suffering from significant droughts. It was decided to bring the waters of the Durance to the city via the Canal of Marseille. To cross over the Arc valley, the aqueduct Roquefavour was built in the middle of the nineteenth century (1842-1847), by Franz Mayor de Montricher, a young engineer of 26 years.
Since then, it is the largest stone aqueduct in the world since it measures 393 meters long and 82 meters high and has three rows of arches. It is more important than the “Pont du Gard” (an ancient Roman aqueduct bridge) which is only 266 m long and 47 m high (it is true that it was built 18 centuries earlier by the Romans).
Roquefavour Aqueduct is located on the commune of Ventabren.
