Marseille : virtual tour of the city

The oldest city of France was founded in 600 BC when Greek sailors of Phocaea discover a narrow cove open to the Mediterranean Sea. The new conquerors founded Massalia and named its natural harbor, the Lacydon, which will become the largest theater of trading. The fate of Marseille is drawn and will be open on trade between East and West.

Each major urban project generates excavations revealing multiple and exciting vestiges that are valorized on the discovery site as often as possible. This is the case for the Museum of Roman Docks built on the same site where the old docks were built in the first century of our era, or the Marseille History Museum built around the remains of the Antique Harbor.

Over the centuries, buildings were erected as the Abbey of St. Victor (fifth century of our era), the Charity and the City Hall (seventeenth century), the Palace Daviel (eighteenth century), the Palace Longchamp (nineteenth century) or the Unit of Habitation of Jeanneret called Le Corbusier (1952). These are just a few examples of the rich heritage of the city of Marseille recognized by the label “City of Art and History”.
